Can eValid be used to monitor user activity

Discussion of the technology underlying the eValid solution.

Can eValid be used to monitor user activity

Postby SDenberg » Tue Feb 20, 2018 8:33 am

Good morning.

Curious question came up the other day in a team meeting:

Can eValid be used to monitor a user's activity?

Thanks

A very good question, and a timely one SDenberg.

The technology answer is "yes" and the practical answer is "only with your permission".

But with your permission has various possible meanings.

The "same origin policy" that applies to all browsers is an important security aspect.

See, for example:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Same-origin_policy

So if you are on website A you can put JavaScript code into your OWNpage that reports back user activity to you as your users use the web pages you provide [for free].

That reporting is securely limited to what you do on A's page and the data goes to A's website only.

The type of data that can be recorded is, basically, whatever can be accessed from your browser DOM's API.

These days the DOM's APIs are pretty much standardized, and you can get a lot of timing and activity information if you put in the effort.

So if this is what is possible with any browser, and if eValid is a browser, then, logically enough, that can be done.

So the answer to your question is:

Yes, if your user uses eValid all the time and you have the right JavaScript in your page.
