We generally estimate that hand-scripting is at least 10X the work of doing a recording and then correcting it if needed.
In eValid, which has such a good recording engine, most of the work of creating a script is done automatically. eValid extracts all of the necessary page details, including DOM details and frame/iframe structure information, automatically.
It depends on the application, of course, but we believe that 99% of the time what you record is what you playback -- right out of the box.
But there are always exceptions and special cases or situations in which a recorded-from-life script won't work because of de-synchronization issues. In this case, the fixup work usually is a very small fraction of the effort of having built the script entirely by hand. It depends on the situation, but we think that hand fixups are < 10% of the total effort.
You have to try it to find out for sure, of course!
