No reason why not?
In fact, it is as easy to do that as it is to run it from a local piece of hardware.
The only difference is cost...the cloud-based machine image may be more expensive than simply owning the hardware.
But that cost may be justified in exchange for the extreme reliability of cloud-based images.
And, add to that, if your application is cloud-based, then what could be better and more symmetric: Monitoring a cloud based application from the cloud.
